Healthy pregnancy – Tips to avoid premature birth

Pregnancy and carrying a baby to term is a wonderful experience for women. Some women conceive naturally whereas others take the help of assisted reproductive technologies like IVF.

If you’re one of those going in for IVF treatments you can visit any of the top 10 IVF centers in India to seek their expert help. But no matter which way you conceive, there’s always the excitement and blissful feeling of life blooming inside you. Soon-to-be parents are filled with anticipation and nervousness alike as the moment to welcome their baby into this world draws near. And while for many couples this journey ends in happiness at giving birth to a healthy baby, for some the picture isn’t so rosy.

Premature births are a cause of worry for many couples around the globe. Statistics show that every year almost 11% of babies born in our country are born preterm or premature. These preterm births are risky as they are associated with high fatality rates. A normal pregnancy comprises three trimesters of 3 months each. Ideally, a pregnancy goes on for 9 months, but in cases of premature births, the child could be delivered anywhere from 7 to 9 months. The complete 9-month cycle is essential for the baby to completely develop inside the womb. As a result, the earlier the baby is born, the more complications arise.

Premature babies are susceptible to many illnesses and infections and are likely to face breathing problems after birth. There’s also the added risk of developing permanent problems like mental illnesses, or stunted brain growth, lung diseases and so on. As a result, preterm babies are given special neonatal care and are constantly monitored to check for any irregularities. Unfortunately, though, many preterm babies don’t make it through and are a major part of newborn deaths. Those who do survive are given constant care and medical support and gradually nursed back to good health.

As premature babies are at a high risk of fatality, pregnant women are advised to be very careful and follow the instructions given by their primary health care provider or OB-GYN. Doctors claim that there are a couple of practices which if followed regularly can go a long way in ensuring that you have a normal pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby.

First of all, drinking lots of water and following a healthy diet is extremely important. Pregnant women should eat right to give their babies the required nutrition. In addition to this leading a healthy lifestyle and following a set daily routine is also a big help.

Secondly, avoiding smoking and drinking is essential during pregnancy. Smoking is known to highly increase the chances of a preterm pregnancy and may also cause other complications. Same goes for alcohol. Ask any of the doctors in top 10 IVF centers of India and they’ll tell you that pregnant women must totally abstain from alcohol and smoking during those 9 months as it could be harmful to the baby.

It’s also imperative that you don’t miss your prenatal appointments with the OB-GYN. Regular checkups and tests help keep track of the baby’s health and warn you of any probable complications, thus allowing the doctors to take adequate safety measures.

Other than this, it is vital to regularly take prenatal vitamins as prescribed by the doctors. If you are already taking medication for some of the other medical condition from before the pregnancy, it’s advisable to let the doctor know about it. That way you can ensure that none of the medicines or drugs interfere with the pregnancy and the baby’s health.

Maintaining a good level of hygiene is vital too. So make sure to keep washing your hands, eat in hygienic conditions, keep a clean house, and stay away from direct contact with pets and animals. The last thing you need during a pregnancy is any kind of infection or food poisoning.

It is also recommended that women regularly do some kind of exercise during their pregnancies. Be it yoga, or going for daily strolls, some routine exercise helps the soon-to-be mothers to be active, provides good circulation, and keeps them healthy.

Another valuable tip is to maintain good oral hygiene. As surprising as it may sound, bad dental health is said to have some correlation to premature deliveries. As such, it’s best if you keep visiting your dentist regularly and keep your teeth and gums in good condition.

In spite of following all these tips, if you experience symptoms such as a constant backache, menstrual cramp-like pain, fluids leaking from your vagina, bleeding, or if you feel the baby pushing down on your cervix, get in touch with your OB-GYN immediately. Any or all of these could be a sign of a preterm delivery. Getting medical help at once could prevent major complications and ensure that you have a safe delivery and in turn, a healthy baby.
