Aspirin, or Disprin (in India), is such a common pain-reliever that we tend to take it entirely for granted. However, this little tablet has a host of uses that include some very interesting applications. Whether it’s repairing damaged hair or cleaning rust, Aspirin packs a surprisingly powerful punch.
Here’s a look at a whole bunch of situations and problems that a simple Aspirin can help resolve.
1. Treat Skin Conditions
Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid) is a source of salicylic acid which is a BHA or beta hydroxyl acid. These compounds help soothe redness, inflammation, and itchiness of the skin. And that’s why it makes for a fantastic face pack.
Here are 4 quick face packs that use Aspirin as the main ingredient:
For acne-prone, oily skin:
Combine 6 aspirins with water to form a paste. Add a few drops of tea tree oil and mix well. Apply for 20 minutes and rinse off. For best results, repeat twice a week.
For acne-prone, dry skin:
Crush 5-6 aspirins with water to form a paste. Add one teaspoon of organic honey, a drop of jojoba oil, almond oil or olive oil. Apply the pack for 15 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.
For sun-damaged skin:
Make a paste of aspirin and add one teaspoon each of olive oil, curd and lime juice. Apply the pack to the damaged area for 20 minutes and rinse with cold water. Results should show if the pack is repeated twice a week.
Aspirin facial toner:
This pack reduces puffiness and discolouration and also works as an antiseptic. Dissolve 8-10 aspirin tablets in 1.5 cups of water and add 4 teaspoons of white vinegar. Mix well and store in a mist spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto a washed and scrubbed face, keep it for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
2. Kill Dandruff And Reverse Hair Damage
Salicylic acid is also an excellent scalp cleanser and is often present in anti-dandruff shampoos. When crushed and mixed into shampoo, it helps exfoliate the scalp and drastically reduce dandruff.
Mix a paste of 3-5 aspirin tablets with your regular amount of shampoo and massage all over the scalp. Leave on for 5 minutes before rinsing it off, and you should see a noticeable reduction in dead skin cells and itchiness.
Aspirin also helps restore damaged hair, especially if you suffer from dryness-related damage after spending time in a chlorinated swimming pool.
For a more moisturized and lustrous mane, take 6 aspirin tablets and mix with water to form a paste. Use this paste as a shampoo and rinse off after 5 minutes. Periodic usage helps repair sun-damage and prevents discolouration of your hair.
3. Whiten And Remove Stains From Clothing
Salicylic acid neutralizes stains by acting on and breaking down their components. Aspirin mixed in a tub of water can entirely remove even those embarrassing sweat stains on your clothes.
Mix 6-8 aspirin tablets in a bucket of warm water and soak all stained clothes for about 15 minutes. Then proceed with the wash as usual. The same approach can be used to whiten clothes that are losing their brightness.
4. Keep Plants Fresher
The Professor of Plant Sciences at UC Davis, Judy Jernstedt, states, “salicylic acid reduces ethylene production, and with less ethylene present, floral senescence is delayed and the flowers last longer. The anti-fungal properties of salicylic acid dissolved in the vase water may also slow growth of mould, which if it enters the cut stem, can damage or clog the vascular tissue.”
In essence, this means that aspirin helps activate a plant’s defences, keeps flowers fresh for longer, and curbs the growth of fungus.
Dissolve 5 aspirin tablets in a gallon of water and spray onto your plants to keep them healthy and thriving.
5. Remove Calluses
Aspirin can also be used to treat those painful calluses.
Simply crush 6 aspirin tablets, mix lemon juice and water, and apply to over the affected areas. Now cover the applied area with a warm towel for about 15 minutes. After this, remove the towel from your foot and use a pumice stone to remove calluses.
6. Remove Hickeys
Got an embarrassing love bite after last night way-too-wild party? Aspirin can help.
Make a simple paste with water and apply it to the hickey to treat it quickly. Since aspirin improves blood flow, the coagulated blood near the surface of your skin should dissolve and disappear after a few hours.
7. Ease A Heart Attack
Aspirin has anti-clogging ingredients and can be crucial in a cardiac emergency. In case you think you’re having a heart attack, stay calm, pop an aspirin to improve circulation and seek medical assistance immediately.
8. Soothe Insect Bites, Stings & Sunburn
Aspirin has anti-inflammatory properties. A simple paste made of 4-5 aspirins and water can reduce swellings and redness caused by bug bites, bee and wasp stings, as well as exposure to the sun. Applying the paste alleviates the pain in a few minutes and reduces chances of the inflammation spreading.
9. Stop A Stroke
Aspirin’s Effectiveness is also demonstrated during strokes since the drug helps thin the blood and prevents further clogging of the key arteries. Taking an aspirin can help buy time before medical help arrives.
10. Cure Hangovers
To tackle a hangover, consume 2 aspirins with a glass of water before hitting the sack. To avoid any post-sleep headaches, follow up with 2 more aspirins the next day, on waking up. As a bonus, aspirin will also combat the liver damage you inflicted on yourself last night.
11. Clean Jewellery
Use aspirin paste and a toothbrush to gently scrub away stains on your jewellery. Once done with this, rinse the paste off the jewellery with water and wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol. Let the jewellery dry and polish it a fine sheen. It is important to note that this hack only applies to solid metal jewellery, and not the plated variety.
12. Remove Rust
Make an aspirin paste and apply liberally onto rust spots. After about 10 minutes, you should be able to wipe the rust off, along with the paste.
13. Heal Razor Burn
For relief from razor burn, apply an aspirin paste over the affected area. Let the paste dry and then rinse off with warm water. Repeat the application if the burn persists.
14. Remove Warts
Warts can be painful and be dealing with them can be pretty stressful. Not only do they hurt, but they are also among the grosser sort of blemish.
To effectively deal with warts, moisten an aspirin tablet and secure it directly over the wart with either a band-aid or masking tape. It is important to maintain contact between the wart and the aspirin tablet. After a few days, the wart should turn black and fall off.
15. Test Stove Top Heating Patterns
Induction stoves tend to bend over time and this means that your food will be heated unevenly. To check a stove top’s heating patterns, just crush some aspirin and sprinkle directly onto the pan with the heat turned low.
On heating, the aspirin turns from white to brown and will outline the areas that are heated first, giving you a clear map of how your stove top is functioning.
