This is the first stage of any gum problem. Brushing and flossing are not always effective in removing the plaque that builds up on your teeth or the gum line. This accumulated plaque could infect your gums and lead to gingivitis. The symptoms of gingivitis include swollen gums that become tender and bleed during brushing. However, it is recommended to keep brushing and flossing regularly as it helps in addressing the issue of gingivitis.

 2. Stress, Insomnia or Unhealthy Diet

Bleeding gums are commonly noticed in college kids because of their erratic lifestyle. Lack of sleep and proper diet, coupled with stress and unhealthy food intake impact the body’s ability to fight inflammation caused by the bacteria that may be present in your mouth. It is, therefore, highly recommended to have a diet rich in proteins, vitamin C & D and green vegetables that add to gum and bone health.

3. Cigarettes

We give you another reason to kick the butt out of your life. Smokers have a high risk of encountering gum diseases due to the presence of many toxins in cigarettes that create inflammation. Besides this, smoking also reduces the body’s immune response and exposes your body to a variety of health issues. Chronic smoking leads to inflammation and enlarged gums. This also accelerates the growth of bacteria in your mouth and gums which can lead to ulcers and other gum problems.

4. New Flossing Routine

A change in your flossing routine could mean that your gums are in danger. Because floss routine has an impact on your teeth and gums. For example, if you resume flossing after a break of a few days, you might end up hurting your gums. Not flossing your gums for days could mean a greater buildup of food and plaque in your teeth and gums, which could be difficult to remove at one go. So it is better to follow a regular routine of cleaning your mouth.

5. Family History

You are unlucky to be born with the genetic marker for periodontal diseases. 35% of the population these days is born with a higher tendency to have periodontal disorders. If you are one of them, you certainly need to work harder than the others to ensure a healthy mouth. DNA testing could narrow down the possibilities of bacterial strains that lead to gum diseases. So, it is advisable to ask your dentist for a DNA test and clear out the possibility of any periodontal disorder.

It is always better to consult your dentist when you have bleeding gums or any other dental problems. Prevention is better than cure. Keep smiling!
