Everyone has a happy place they go to when they feel sad. I have one too – the fridge. I have tried the crazy routines that people follow in the name of diet, but the most I have gone without cheating is 23 minutes. Then I came across a new fad that all A-list celebrities are going gaga over – the Alkaline Diet.

The Alkaline Diet was made popular by Victoria Beckham when she tweeted about an “Alkaline Diet Cookbook”. Otherwise known as alkaline ash diet, the alkaline diet forms its basis in the belief that certain food can alter the pH value and acidity of body fluids like blood and urine. When your body metabolizes food, it is actually burning the food to extract energy (or calories) in a controlled manner. When wood burns, it leaves an ash residue. Similarly, when food burns it leaves an ash residue as well. This ash is either acidic or alkaline depending on what you eat and can directly affect your body. Acid ash is known to have adverse effects on your body and makes you vulnerable
against diseases while alkaline ash protects your body against illnesses and improves your health.

What Do You Need To Know About The Alkaline Diet?

As with all diets, it is advisable to consult a dietician before jumping into the alkaline diet to understand how it might affect your body. Here’s a list of 10 things you need to know before starting:

1. What Can You Eat?

Seeds, nuts and legumes, most vegetables and fruits, soybeans, and tofu are alkaline based and should be consumed.

2. What Can’t You Consume?

Alcohol, caffeine, eggs, meat, dairy, processed foods, and canned foods are a big no-no.

3. Exercise

You do not need to work out to lose weight while you’re on an alkaline diet. You may however, choose to do so to stay healthy.

4. Gluten-Free Diet

You need to check all food labels carefully to make sure that the contents are gluten free as you strictly need to avoid gluten induced food including wheat.

5. Cost

While there are many books and courses on alkaline diet that might be expensive, there are many alkaline food charts online that you can refer to. The actual cost of the food items are moderately – sparsely expensive.

6. What Is My Source Of Protein?

Since you are off meats and dairies, your main source of protein will be lentils, nuts, seeds, quinoa, chickpeas, chia etc.

7. Is It Healthy?

Alkaline diets are safe and healthy since it involves consumption of only natural and unprocessed foods.

8. Can An Alkaline Diet Really Prevent Cancer?

There isn’t a scientific evidence that supports the claim that alkaline diets prevent cancer. However, it makes you healthier as you steer clear of unhealthy processed food and reduce the risk of contracting other diseases.

9. Can An Underweight Person Go On An Alkaline Diet?

Absolutely. Being underweight is as problematic as being overweight. Your over acidic digestive system does not allow your body to absorb nutrients, leaving you skinny and weak. Once you start an alkaline diet, your body will fill out in the right places and you will gain muscle mass.

10. Does it really work?

A diet is only as successful as the person dieting. Weight loss is not a guarantee if you are compelled to binge on munchies that are not part of the diet.
